February 28, 2001 Carl Reiner presented with the Mark Twain Prize for Comedy
(Washington, D.C.) The third annual Kennedy Center Celebration of American Humor took place at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on October 24, 2000. The celebration included lectures, symposia, and master classes. The final event featured the presentation to Carl Reiner of the third annual Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, named after one of America's--and the world's--greatest humorists. The celebration was aired nationally on PBS on February 28, 2001.
Featured guests included Mel Brooks, Dick Van Dyke, Mary Tyler Moore, Steve Martin, Jerry Seinfeld, Ray Romano, Sam Denoff, Bill Persky, George Shapiro and Carl's son, director Rob Reiner.
As a social commentator, satirist and creator of characters, Samuel Clemens-the distinguished 19th century novelist and essayist also known as Mark Twain*--was a fearless observer of society, who startled many while delighting and informing many more with his uncompromising perspective of social injustice and personal folly. He revealed the great truth of humor when he said "against the assault of laughter nothing can withstand."
Reiner's work displays a deep understanding of human comedy. His brilliant writing and characterizations on the television series "Your Show Of Shows," starring Sid Caesar, are still the hallmark against which all sketch comedy is measured. It was Reiner who gave Mary Tyler Moore the opportunity and guidance to bring to life Laura Petrie on the "Dick Van Dyke Show." Reiner charted the path for women's roles in television which led to shows such as "Kate and Allie," "Murphy Brown," and "Ally McBeal." His work as a director in film with Steve Martin, George Burns, and Lily Tomlin is acknowledged to have showcased these unique talents at their funniest. Reiner's collaboration with Mel Brooks on "The 2000 Year Old Man" was in the great comedy tradition of Twain and Voltaire who used a comic naif to point out our own foibles.
The Kennedy Center, as the nation's center for the performing arts, recognizes and presents all of the performing arts including opera, musical theater, drama, ballet and dance, as well as symphony and all kinds of smaller musical ensembles performing every imaginable kind of music. The Kennedy Center's Celebration of Humor and Mark Twain Prize recognize those who create humor from their uniquely American experiences.
"Carl Reiner, besides being one of the great American comic minds of the second half of the 20th Century, is also a personal favorite of mine," said Lawrence J. Wilker, president of the Kennedy Center. "His art and wit have helped shape the humorous landscape of the United States."
Wilker continued, "The educational and professional activities that support the Mark Twain Prize and the Celebration of Humor are an opportunity for young humorists to meet and interact with seasoned professionals and leaders in the field."
The proceeds of the evening, given in the name of each year's recipient, are used by the Kennedy Center Education Department to nurture the talents of young American humorists. As recipient of the Mark Twain Prize, Carl Reiner will receive a copy of an 1884 bronze portrait bust of Mark Twain sculpted by Karl Gerhardt (1853-1940). The bust and images of it are courtesy of the Mark Twain House, Hartford, Connecticut. The event is a joint production of the Kennedy Center, Mark Krantz and John Schreiber of The John Schreiber Group, and the Kaminsky Brothers (Bob and Peter).
The Kennedy Center Celebration of American Humor was instituted as an annual event in 1998. The first recipient of the Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize was Richard Pryor (October 20, 1998) and the second recipient was Jonathan Winters (October 20, 1999).
